A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is an investment account for supporting charitable organizations. Contributing cash, securities, or other assets to a donor-advised fund at a nonprofit like the Lupus Research Alliance makes you eligible for a tax deduction.
If you don’t already have one, consider starting a donor-advised fund with a community foundation or financial institution either now, or through a bequest. Contributions to your DAF are invested, and grow tax-free. You also get an immediate tax deduction when your DAF is set up, and when you make contributions. You can choose to make a gift later.
This is an easy way to donate long-term appreciated securities, and may eliminate capital gains tax. Plus, the sponsor of your DAF handles all record-keeping and disbursements.
