A study led by Dr. Henry W. Chen published in the highly respected peer-reviewed publication JAMA Dermatology study showed that “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk is higher with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) than with psoriasis.”
Supported by an NIH grant, the study analyzed records of 8,138 persons with CLE (matched with 24 675 persons with systemic lupus erythematosus, 192 577 persons with psoriasis, and 81 380 disease-free controls). People with CLE had a significantly increased risk for prevalent and incident ASCVD compared to controls. Authors concluded that “CLE was associated with an increased risk for ASCVD, potentially warranting appropriate screening tests and clinician referrals.”
