Your legacy can advance new lupus treatments and a cure.

A planned gift is a powerful way to drive new breakthroughs for people living with lupus – and no matter your income level, your impact can be greater than you think for generations to come. Making a planned gift can be as simple as naming the Lupus Research Alliance in your will, or as a beneficiary on your life insurance or retirement plan. This type of giving lets you put the financial needs of your family and loved ones first, and may offer you tax benefits now.

Why make a planned gift to the Lupus Research Alliance?

When you include the Lupus Research Alliance in your estate planning, you will:

Make a powerful impact

Know that 100% of your gift supports research driving treatments and a cure. 100% of donations go to research programs because our Board of Directors funds all administrative and fundraising costs.

Shape Your Legacy

Experience the deep satisfaction of making a gift that transcends your lifetime.

Realize Tax Benefits

Work with your professional advisors to explore options that can offer tax savings.

Provide for Your Family

Ensure loved ones are cared for first, and modify your planned gift as needed.

The Lupus Research Alliance came into my life at a critical time, offering resources, support and hope for a healthy and happy life with lupus. My legacy gift is not only a thank you, but a way to help build on the important work they do supporting lupus research and the community of patients and caregivers.

Ways to Make a Planned Gift

Make a Bequest

Gifts by will, both large and small, are vital to our work. You can leave a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of your residual estate (what remains after other gifts and expenses). You can also gift assets like property or appreciated securities. Bequests to the Lupus Research Alliance are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. Ask your professional advisor for more guidance.

Start a Will

Haven’t yet started your estate planning? FreeWill.com is an online tool that is intuitive and free of cost, and can help you make a will. Because this online tool is supported by partner nonprofits, including the Lupus Research Alliance, it’s easy to include a charitable gift in your will.

The tool may be able to generate a document that is legally binding in your jurisdiction, or may offer prompts to alert you if you need to work with an attorney. Get started.

Get Legal Language

Already working with an estate attorney to create or modify a will? Talk with them about your wishes and share this language as a helpful reference:

“I give, devise, and bequest to the Lupus Research Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Corporation, headquartered at 270 Madison Avenue, Suite 300, New York, NY 10016 USA, the sum of $_____ (or “the rest, residue and remainder of my estate”) to be used for lupus research.”

Name Us as a Beneficiary

Making the Lupus Research Alliance a full or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan is an easy way to make a planned gift – often, a substantial one – at little or no cost to you. You do not need to update your will, and since this type of gift does not go through probate it can make an immediate impact for vital research.

Life Insurance Policies

If you have a policy with a cash surrender value that is no longer needed by your spouse or adult children, it can be gifted to the Lupus Research Alliance by naming us as a beneficiary (which may also reduce estate taxes). To do so, send a written request to the insurance company. Your insurance agent or professional advisor can usually assist.

Provide the insurer with our information:
Legal Name: Lupus Research Alliance, Inc.
Address: 270 Madison Avenue, Suite 300,
New York, NY 10016
Federal Tax ID #: 58-2492929

Retirement Plans

You can gift any balance remaining in an IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement plan by naming the Lupus Research Alliance as a beneficiary. You decide what percentage you want us to receive (up to 100%). To get started, ask your plan administrator or financial institution for a change of beneficiary form, or find it on the plan website.

Please list us as:
Legal Name: Lupus Research Alliance, Inc.
Address: 270 Madison Avenue, Suite 300,
New York, NY 10016
Federal Tax ID #: 58-2492929

Make a Tax-Advantaged Gift

You can also plan a gift during your lifetime to better manage your financial and tax situation, while making a significant impact for lupus research. Talk with your attorney, accountant or tax advisor to explore how the following strategies can best help you meet your philanthropic goals.

Retirement Plan Rollover

If you’re 70 ½ years or older and have an IRA, your plan administrator can transfer funds directly to the Lupus Research Alliance through a qualified charitable distribution. This counts toward your annual required minimum distribution, and may provide a highly beneficial tax savings.

As of 2024, you may transfer up to $105,000 per individual in a calendar year (by December 31). Your administrator must distribute the gift directly to us, or if you have a checkbook that draws from your IRA you may write us a check.

Provide your administrator with this information:
Legal Name: Lupus Research Alliance, Inc.
Address: 270 Madison Avenue, Suite 300,
New York, NY 10016
Federal Tax ID #: 58-2492929

Donor-Advised Fund Distribution

If you don’t already have one, consider starting a donor-advised fund (DAF) with a community foundation or financial institution either now, or through a bequest. Contributions to your DAF are invested, and grow tax-free. You also get an immediate tax deduction when your DAF is set up, and when you make contributions. You can choose to make a gift later.

This is an easy way to donate long-term appreciated securities, and may eliminate capital gains tax. Plus, the sponsor of your DAF handles all record-keeping and disbursements.

Share this information with your sponsor:
Legal Name: Lupus Research Alliance, Inc.
Address: 270 Madison Avenue, Suite 300,
New York, NY 10016
Federal Tax ID #: 58-2492929
