DoD’s Lupus Research Program – Created Through LRA Advocacy Leadership – Announces 12 New Grant Recipients

February 28, 2023

The Lupus Research Program (LRP) within the Department of Defense that you, our community, advocated to create, has recommended to fund 12 new applications for promising scientific studies to improve treatment for lupus.

The dedicated Lupus Research Program was first established in 2017 under the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs operated by the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in Ft. Detrick, MD. The Lupus Research Alliance and dedicated advocates like you worked for the creation of this important program focused on supporting innovative and impactful lupus research.

The LRP was allocated $10 million for FY 2022 and the grants recommended for funding were just announced. We are very proud to see that many of the researchers recommended have previously received grants from the Lupus Research Alliance — we pick winners!

Since the LRP began six years ago, $55 million has been allocated, and these new grants bring the total awards allocated to 73. That adds many many significant discoveries to the body of knowledge about lupus. The grant application notice for the $10 million allocated for FY 2023 will be released this spring.

On March 28, together we will be asking Congress to increase this funding to $15 million for FY 2024 so many more worthwhile studies can be funded.  Register here to add your voice to the hundreds letting Congress know why investing more in lupus research is so vitally important.

Together, ManyOne Can make a difference!
