Glossary: Antiphospholipid Syndrome

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease in which the body makes abnormal proteins in the blood called antiphospholipid autoantibodies that attack  phospholipids (or fat) found in the outer wall of cells.  This causes the damaged cells to stick to each other and become clots that can block critical blood flow in blood vessels.
