Leading the way to a cure

Annual Meeting of Largest European Rheumatology Forum

Scientific Advances from Europe

The Annual European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR) convened in Berlin, Germany in June 2012 with the aim of providing a forum of the highest scientific, educational, and social exchange.

Each year, EULAR facilitates the exchange of ideas between scientists—as well as interactions between patients, medical practitioners, and professionals representing the pharmaceutical industry.

It is the largest meeting of it’s kind in Europe to promote, stimulate and support the research, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of rheumatic diseases.

Leading experts in the fields of rheumatology, lupus, and other autoimmune diseases from around the world — including ALR Scientific Advisory Board Chair, Mary Crow, MD — attended four days of Berlin 2012 lectures and discussions.  These sessions explored the new advances being made in basic science, treatments, and clinical practices.

The very scientists who head groundbreaking rheumatic disease scientific studies made these captivating presentations.

Those investigations that focus exclusively on lupus also ran the gamut … from treatment, to basic science, to clinical practice.  Clearly much great work is happening across the Atlantic, which was evidenced by the broad array of topics covered.  Here are just three of them:  a new anti-interferon treatmenta therapeutic target to “turn off” lupus through T regulatory cells … and a new clinical guideline that urges early biopsy for lupus nephritis.

Dr. Crow says of the EULAR experience, “It was exciting to participate in such a large meeting and hear what our colleagues on the other side of the Atlantic are working on. Like the ALR, EULAR fosters the sharing of ideas — and that’s essential to discovering treatments for rheumatology and lupus.”

The next EULAR Annual European Congress of Rheumatology will take place from 12-15 June 2013 in Madrid, Spain.
