Description of ALR Pilot Grant Program
The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is an independent, voluntary health agency formed to provide a concentrated effort fot the prevention, treatment and cure of systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus or SLE). The Pilot Grant program will fund research that is directly relevant to identifying the cause, cure and/or treatment of SLE and/or its secondary complications.
Prorgram Goals: The Pilot Grant program is designed to support efforts that reflect innovative approaches and techniques and aid in the development of necessary pilot data for submission of larger awards to NIH, ALR or other funding agencies. Applications in the following areas are particularly encouraged; (1) human investigation; (2) research that takes advantage of existing or planned collections of patients or clinical materials; and/or (3) grants that seek to identify or charecterize putative biomarkers. A biomarker is an indicator of a disease process and could replace hard clinical endpoints as a measure of the effectiveness of new therapeutic interventions. Examples might include, but are not limited to: attempts to validate candidate biomarkers in well-defined populations, provide new technologies to measure biomarkers or establish reliable assays for suspected markers. Preference for funding will be given to applicants who fall into any of the following categories: (1) new investigators who demonstrate promise and productivity and are working in an environment supportive of their research efforts; (2) scientists who are experts in areas other than lupus but whose expertise is relevant to the advancement of lupus research; (3) established lupus investigators embarking upon clearly discernible new directions in their work.
Eligibility Criteria: Individuals with doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DO or equivalent) are eligible to apply. Applications are open to investigators working at established research institutions (both for profit and not-for profit) as well as investigators at state health agencies, the FDA, VA and at intramural divisions of NIH. The ALR does not impose geographic restrictions on its applicants. Investigators working anywhere in the world are eligible to apply. The ALR is willing to appropriately support research in industry or collaborations between academia and industry.
The ALR is currently supporting a large SLE genetics initiative. This initiative, led by a consortium of investigators, is designed to conduct a whole-genome association study in SLE. The ALR will only review Pilot Grant applications in genetics that complement this special initiative, or that are unrelated. Projects that can be reasonably construed as duplicative of this intiative should not be submitted.
