Through ALR's advocacy efforts, lupus has been listed as a disease eligible for funding in this competitive, $50-million program since 2004. More than $5-million has been awarded to lupus researchers since the first year of listing. For more information on currently funded researchers, please visit our Department of Defense funding page.
We are grateful for the work of our volunteer advocates, and our champions on Capitol Hill - Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Charles Schumer (D-NY), and Arlen Specter (R-PA), and Representatives Steve Rothman (D-IL) and Jesse Jackson, Jr (D-IL). This increased attention and funding for lupus research helps bring us ever closer to our goal of discovering new treatments, means of prevention, and a cure for lupus. The success of this effort not only reflects the important work being conducted in our community but also makes great strides towards ALR's legislative priority of designated funding for lupus research through the FY '09 DOD Appropriations.
