Lupus Awareness Month in State of New York
The Lupus Research Alliance is proud to visit Albany as a member of Lupus Agencies of New York State (LANYS) to bring the voice of lupus to legislators in the State Assembly and Senate.
We are excited to announce that New York State Assembly and Senate passed resolutions memorializing Governor Andrew Cuomo to proclaim May 2017 as Lupus Awareness Month in New York State. We thank Senator Joseph Griffo as the Prime Senate Sponsor and Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. as the Prime Assembly Sponsor of the Lupus Resolution.
LANYS scheduled their Annual Lupus Awareness Day on May 3, 2017 at the State’s Capitol to educate elected policymakers, state agency officials, health care professionals, and the general public about lupus and the needs of people affected by the disease.

This year LANYS is urging members of the Assembly (A) and Senate (S) to support bills that:
- A02169 S04268 - promotes basic and clinical research programs designed to reduce or prevent suffering from Lupus, by providing funding, if available, to state academic medical institutions within the state.
- A02788 S05489 - establishes the lupus education and prevention fund which will be financed by optional contributions derived from a taxpayer check-off placed on all corporate and personal income tax forms in order to create the lupus health care and wellness education and outreach program within the Department of Health.
- S01703 - relates to authorizing the creation of lupus awareness license plate and to creating the lupus research and education fund.
LANYS is comprised of the various lupus organizations that provide program services in NYS. Advocates attending the event represented Lupus and Allied Diseases Association, Lupus Alliance of Long Island/Queens, Lupus Alliance of Upstate New York, Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Research Alliance, and Lupus Friends and Family Foundation.
