PRESS RELEASES

Theresa T. Lu, M.D., Ph.D. Awarded the Jean Davis Research Grant

March 5, 2014

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is proud to award the Jean Davis Research Grant to Theresa T. Lu, M.D., Ph.D. at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Named for Jean Davis, mother of Willie Colon who is a star National Football League offensive guard, the grant honors Ms. Davis and her commitment to finding better treatments and a cure for lupus.  Ms. Davis herself has the disease and personally knows the struggles lupus presents; she understands the crucial need for better therapeutics for the estimated 1.5 million Americans and more than 5 million people worldwide diagnosed with lupus.

“Jean Davis and her son Willie Colon have both been tremendous supporters of the Alliance for Lupus Research, and its mission to fund targeted, novel bio-medical research that will propel our quest to find a cure for lupus,” said Kenneth M. Farber, president of the ALR.  “On behalf of the ALR and everyone who is affected by this disease, we are honored to have such strong advocates to partner with in our endeavors to eradicate the devastating effects of lupus.”

Dr. Lu and her scientific research team at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York will be targeting a dendritic cell – stromal axis in lupus.  Their study will gain insight into how lymphoid tissues are regulated and how the immune response can be controlled.  By utilizing a drug already approved by the FDA in her research, there is potential for developing a beneficial therapy for those with lupus within a relatively quick period of time.  Providing lupus patients with targeted and safe treatments is critically needed, as there has only been one new treatment approved by the FDA for lupus in over 50 years.

Together, we're leading the way to a cure.
