Steroids, Older Age Worsen Lupus Damage

December 28, 2012

Despite significant improvements in treatment during recent decades, patients with systemic lupus erythematosus remain at risk for disease damage, particularly if they are older and use high-dose corticosteroids, a longitudinal study found.

In any given month, patients who were 70 or older at the time of lupus diagnosis had triple the likelihood of developing damage compared with those younger than 40 (odds ratio 3.0, 95% CI 2 to 4.5, P<0.0001), according to Michele Petri, MD, of Johns Hopkins University, and colleagues.

.

In addition, on a multivariate analysis the OR reached 4.0 (95% CI 3.2 to 4.9, P<0.0001) for those taking 20 mg/day of corticosteroids or more, the researchers reported in the December issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.
