A letter from our President on World Lupus Day

May 10, 2012

Dear Friends,

Today is World Lupus Day and I would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) for your continued friendship and support.  I believe that the ALR has become the exceptional organization it is because of people like you, and your conviction that it is research that will bring better treatments and eventually a cure for lupus.

Since the ALR’s inception thirteen years ago we have remained committed to funding the top lupus researchers in the world. Over this time, the ALR has committed over $78 million to lupus research.  That is more than any non-governmental agency.  It is our greatest tenant that one hundred percent of all donations raised go directly to support lupus research programs, because the ALR board of directors funds all administrative and fundraising expenses.

This dedication to mission has brought us pivotal moments in lupus research.  The Alliance for Lupus Research was one of the pioneering funders and supporters of B-cell research which helped to bring BENLYSTA® to market, the first lupus specific drug in 52 years.  The ALR funded consortium, SLEGEN, identified 13 genes linked to lupus and the ALR was the only lupus organization to fund an important new study using the ImmunoChip.  The ImmunoChip project seeks to identify lupus susceptibility genes that may be pertinent to several autoimmune diseases. This study is among the few to concentrate heavily on non-Caucasian populations for a significantly broader evaluation, while utilizing the most current and comprehensive information about human DNA. To date the ALR has funded 163 grants, an amazing achievement, but one that was only attained because of you.

It has been a privilege to be a part of such unprecedented accomplishments, but, this is only the beginning.  The ALR aspires to greater achievements.  It has never been the charter of the Alliance for Lupus Research to live into perpetuity.  On this World Lupus Day the ALR fortifies its conviction that we will continue to work towards our ultimate goal and find a cure for lupus. I am grateful to have you as an ally in this critical endeavor.

I hope this World Lupus Day finds you well.  We look forward to continuing on this journey with you, we are truly on the precipice of an extraordinary time in the study of lupus.

Sincerely,
