Lupus Research Alliance Raises Awareness for Lupus Research on TV

Margaret Dowd, co-CEO and co-President of the Lupus Research Alliance speaks out about the need for increased lupus research funding and adequate healthcare for lupus patients on NY1 “In Focus with Cheryl Wills” TV show during Lupus Awareness Month. She joins City Council Member Vanessa Gibson and NYS Senator Kevin Parker along with dedicated patient advocate Tiffany Peterson and lupus specialist at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Jill Buyon.

“We are strong advocates on the Hill for federal funding for lupus research and for state-of-the art care that keeps our patients safe and healthy,” commented Ms. Dowd. “The Alliance for Lupus Research, Lupus Research Institute and S.L.E. Lupus Foundation merged to form the Lupus Research Alliance, now united to free the world of lupus through the power of science. Along with our patient partners from around the country, we vigorously lobby on the Hill every year; this year’s efforts helped achieve a $2 billion budget increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the jewel in the crown of biomedical research worldwide. But NIH funding has been flat for 10 years, and this disease needs far greater federal funding to maintain the momentum and realize the breakthrough science of tomorrow. As the largest private funder of lupus research, the Lupus Research Alliance invests in innovation so that brilliant investigators can secure further support from the NIH to advance this bold new research. That’s how to deliver the new treatments and the cure lupus patients so desperately need.”
