Tell Your Senators to Protect Defense Funding for Medical Research

Medical research, including lupus, is at risk with the latest proposed Senate bill! We need your voice to speak out to your senators on behalf of the national lupus community.

Among the initiatives in jeopardy is the new $5 million DoD Lupus Research Program established this year by legislation that Lupus Research Alliance advocates had successfully urged Congress to approve. That program could be eliminated if the amendment does not pass!

Join 45 patient groups and call or email your two senators and urge them to support the bipartisan Durbin-Blunt amendment during debate on the NDAA the National Defense Authorization Act. This amendment would effectively squash several provisions in the bill, S. 1519, that would restrict or stop medical research programs funded by the Department of Defense (DoD).

S. 1519 could take away research support for a disease that is a very real health issue for the armed forces. Lupus Research Alliance President and CEO Kenneth M. Farber, described lupus as “a chronic and complex autoimmune disease, that primarily affects women and particularly women of color -- two growing populations of our active-duty personnel and veterans.”

Act today while S. 1519 is being debated on the Senate floor -- urge your senators to support the Durbin-Blunt amendment and support continued investments in the medical research programs at DoD. Click here to find how to contact your senators.
