Partnering For a Cure

On November 4, 2013, Kenneth M. Farber, President of the ALR, and Anthony J. Coyle, Chief Scientific Officer, Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) at Pfizer made a presentation at the Partnering for Cures 5th annual FasterCures meeting in NYC.

Mr. Farber discussed one of the ways in which the ALR is partnering with CTI and with leading academic medical centers to facilitate structured pathways for translating scientific ideas into clinical programs to hopefully accelerate the pace of developing new treatments. This approach is of particular interest to FasterCures, which is a center of the Milken Institute determined to remove barriers to medical progress.

ALR Gala Honored Philanthropist

On December 4, 2013, big names in the world of finance attended the ALR’s Benefit Dinner in recognition of honoree Howard W. Lutnick, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Cantor Fitzgerald and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BGC Partners. Mr. Lutnick was honored for his outstanding commitment to ending lupus.

Co-chairs of the event were Robert Wood Johnson IV, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Jets; Robert W. Pittman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clear Channel; and Daniel M. LaVecchia, Executive Managing Director, North America of BGC Partners, Inc.

A Big Day with Payoff for the Jets... and the ALR

The New York Jets-New England Patriots matchup on October 20, 2013 ended with good news for Jets fans — and the ALR. In a neckand- neck game at MetLife Stadium, the Jets eventually won in overtime — but the ALR was a guaranteed winner from the beginning.

Once again, the Jets heightened lupus awareness by giving gamegoers the opportunity to support the ALR. Prior to the kickoff at 1:00 pm, ALR staff and volunteers distributed ALR-branded reusable shopping bags and collected donations from fans entering the stadium gates. In addition, the ALR and the Jets encouraged fans to text LUPUS to 85944 to donate $10 to support lupus research.*

Over the past several years, the Jets have done a spectacular job in spreading the word that research is critical, raising more than $10 million for the ALR.
