Acknowledging Participants in Lupus Awareness Month

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) celebrated Lupus Awareness Month in May and asked everyone to Get In On It.

This exciting new campaign was designed to inspire people to take action and rally behind the essential mission of finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for lupus. The ALR knows that each of us can bring awareness of the disease by reaching out to family and friends... and by joining the momentum to draw attention of lupus to the forefront of our nation's consciousness.

  • Telling stories. See what Get In On It means from the viewpoints of ALR-funded investigators as well as people with lupus. Visit our new webpage: www.lupusresearch.org/events/get-in-on-it/

  • Sharing ideas. During Lupus Awareness Month, the ALR brought together its Scientific Advisory Board and each scientist who is currently receiving ALR funding for a collaborative meeting in New York City. This annual event is a wonderful vehicle for scientists to learn from one another — greatly speeding up the discovery process.

  • Returning to Broadway — Mack the Molecule, our animated mascot, returned to the Great White Way on a billboard for Lupus Awareness Month. Having made his Broadway debut earlier in March, Mack's second appearance on Times Square was aimed to heighten awareness of the disease and the critical research initiatives that are being funded by the ALR.

  • Having fun. Mack the Molecule took time out of his busy schedule to pose in pictures with people who have made it their business to advocate for greater lupus awareness.

Lupus is more prevalent then most people think. The more we talk about it and the more funds we invest in scientific lupus research — the more we can change the course of this debilitating disease.

The need to spread the word about lupus awareness isn't over in one day — or one month. We need to foster research and improve patient care all year long and the support and goodwill of ordinary people goes a long way in helping the ALR reach these goals. Each of us can make a difference — Get In On It!
