UPDATE: Drug Research And Developments

Much of the news in this issue of the Lupus Research Update is centered on the growing number of potential new drugs and treatments in clinical trials — something that was unheard of when the ALR was founded ten years ago.

“I don’t think anyone could have foreseen the explosion in lupus research we have witnessed in the past 10 years,” said Barbara Boyts, President of the ALR. “I’m proud of the critical role the ALR has played. We have supported research leading to the development of more than a third of potential treatments that are currently in various stages of clinical trials.”

Our Voices Have Been Heard

Our advocacy efforts have paid off again: two more lupus investigators have received funding from the Department of Defense (DoD) Peer Reviewed Medical Program – which will bring the total granted to lupus research by this program to a projected $8 million.

In addition, lupus has been listed again as an eligible disease for funding under the 2010 DoD program. Our sincerest gratitude to Senator Charles Schumer, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Congressman Steve Rothman for their help and support in this achievement.

Matching Gifts Drive Donations Up

Celebrating 10 years of progress in lupus researchIn celebration of the ALR’s 10th anniversary year, our Board of Directors graciously offered to match every gift donated through our fundraising and newsletter appeals.

The matching gift effort increased responses – contributing to the expected $65 million the ALR will have committed to lupus research by the end of this year. We gratefully acknowledge the pivotal role our Board of Directors has played in helping to raise these vitally needed funds — and we extend our gratitude to each and every donor who faithfully sent their gift to the ALR.

There is still time to double the impact of your generosity.

Every gift generated by this newsletter will also be matched on a dollar-for dollar basis. If you have been thinking about renewing your support — what better time than right now!

Across the nation, people are taking steps to fight lupus by joining the ALR’s Walk with Us to Cure Lupus.

The drive, dedication and compassion of our team captains, walkers, and supporters enable the ALR to devote much-needed funds to lupus research. To each of these individuals we offer our sincerest thanks. For a list of our upcoming Spring events, visit www.lupusresearch.org
