The Face of Lupus: Fighting the Disease on Many Fronts

Dr. Charles Huebner and sonsChampion... supporter... ALR Board Member — Charles J. Huebner, MD, is all these things and more.

Dr. Huebner is a dedicated physician, researcher, and founder of Harbor Arthritis Center in Petoskey, Michigan — the largest rheumatology practice in Northern Michigan, where he lives with his wife, Melanie S. Manary, MD, and sons Christian and Timmy.

When most people hear the word rheumatology, they think of treatment for arthritis and diseases of the joints. Dr. Heubner does treat these conditions — but he also cares for people who suffer from autoimmune diseases, such as lupus.

His connection to the ALR is clear, but Dr. Heubner's close association to our organization is much more personal: his wife has lupus.

Dr. Huebner enthusiastically called his relationship with the ALR a perfect fit: "I had thought about starting my own research funding organization, but when I learned about the ALR, I realized that someone had already created what I was thinking about!"

In 2002, the ALR approached Dr. Huebner about chairing a fundraising event and he immediately rallied behind us — raising awareness and carving out an important niche for the ALR in Petoskey.

As it turns out, Dr. Heubner is extraordinarily persuasive when it comes to raising funds to find a cure for lupus: "After our 7th Annual Northern Michigan Walk with Us to Cure Lupus event, I am thrilled and humbled by the fact that we have raised more than $400,000." This absolutely incredible accomplishment is all the more remarkable considering that Dr. Huebner's town has fewer than 7,000 residents.

Pulling off an event of this caliber is an enormous feat for anyone, but Dr. Huebner is always quick to deflect kudos. Yet, in reality, he is a mighty force and inspiration to so many.

Always a proponent of our work, Dr. Huebner enlists everyone he can by expressing a heartfelt belief in the ALR: "With a proven track record of delivering results for the past 10 years, the ALR affirms my belief that this truly is the best place to direct funds — the ALR will lead to new treatments and a cure."
