ADVOCACY CORNER — Standing Up for Federal Lupus Research Dollars
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of ALR advocates, since 2005 lupus has been listed as a disease eligible for funding in the Department of Defense's (DOD's) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). More than $5 million has been awarded to lupus researchers through this program. Of the five lupus research projects awarded by the PRMRP, three of these projects were awarded based on proposal data supported by previous ALR lupus funding and research!
This year, the ALR and advocates across the country are asking their Members of Congress to include appropriations for a dedicated DOD lupus research program, as DOD does for other diseases such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. It is essential that Congress should recognize the prevalence of lupus and designate yearly appropriations specific to lupus research.
