The Faces of Lupus

Shelley Shuttlesworth

Connection to lupus: I was diagnosed with lupus in the summer of 2000. My battle with the disease has been a rollercoaster. I’ve suffered from skin rashes, terrible fatigue, kidney problems, joint pain, vasculitis, and many other symptoms, and have had to take several harsh medications. Lupus also affects my whole family: after a lifetime of illness, my cousin Misty passed away from the disease in January 2006. How did you become involved with the ALR?: Just a couple of days before my first walk, one of my mother’s teachers heard about it on a local radio station and we signed up. Last year, my team“Shelley’s Heroes” raised $16,440!

Why do you support the ALR?: Lupus is obviously a very personal cause for me and I felt I had to get involved. Fundraising for the ALR helps me feel like I am doing something to fight back. I know that with the help of research, someday other people will not have to go through what I have had to endure. I believe that together we can find a cure for lupus.
