Advocacy Update — ALR Goes to Washington

ALR’s third annual National Volunteer Meeting will be held at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C., March 11-13. Hundreds of ALR fundraisers and volunteers will gather to network and trade fundraising tips. Perhaps most crucially, they will also help bring our mission for increased federal funding for lupus research to Congress during our second annual Advocacy Day, March 13.

Last year, ALR community members spent the first Advocacy Day on May 2 visiting Congressional representatives to share their experiences with lupus. These visits were a first step in our grassroots advocacy program as we move towards our goal of a designated program for lupus research within the Department of Defense. We hope to continue our successful efforts this year. Another event during the meeting is our National Volunteer Awards Dinner, scheduled for the evening of March 12. The dinner celebrates the success of our Walk with Us to Cure Lupus program in 2006. During the dinner, we will honor Senator Charles Schumer for his invaluable support of lupus research.
