The Alliance for Lupus Research is a national, voluntary health organization based in  New York City, and chaired by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a member of the founding family of Johnson & Johnson. The mission of the ALR is to support research into the prevention, treatment, and cure of systemic lupus erythematosus. Commonly known as lupus, this autoimmune disease affects as many as one million Americans, ninety percent of whom are women. Lupus is the leading cause of death among women with autoimmune diseases who are in their childbearing years. Since its founding in 1999, the ALR has given more money to lupus research than any non-governmental agency in the world. One hundred percent (100%) of all donations to the ALR are used exclusively to support lupus research.
