The government requires anyone over 70 ½ to withdraw a percentage of their IRA account which is subject to taxation. But any part of the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) that is contributed to a qualified charity, such as the Lupus Research Alliance, is not taxed and the amount goes directly to fund lupus research. Current law permits you to make a gift up to $100,000 a year from your IRA to a qualified charity. Your IRA administrator must receive this request in writing. Here is the link to a form letter to direct your IRA administrator to make a contribution of this kind to the Lupus Research Alliance.
